Curriculum planning
is based on observations of the child’s needs and
monitoring of progress, helping children move towards the
stepping stones of the curriculum ready for school life.
Children with special
needs often learn at a slower pace, need more repetition
and skills have to be taught through a structured programme.
To support this, the nursery uses the Portage programme
which promotes this type of learning.
When children come
into nursery, a baseline assessment and individual education
plan is put into place by nursery staff and parents will
be made aware of all the child’s targets so they
will have chance to support their learning at home.
As each child's disabilities are different, goals
will vary and may focus on developing movement, learning,
play, communication and participation in the activities
of everyday living.
